What aperture should you use for portrait photography? A: It's better to use a wide aperture (f/2.8 to f/5.6) to create a shallow depth of field behind the subject. Some portrait lenses can go as wide as f/1.4 What shutter speed should you use if the focal length of the lens is 55mm? A: A shutter speed greater than 1/focal length is recommended.
